Body Image

What is body image?

Body image refers to a person's perception, thoughts, and feelings about their own body. This includes the way individuals see themselves when they look in the mirror, their feelings about their physical appearance, and how they believe others perceive them. Body image can be influenced by various factors, including cultural and societal standards, media portrayals of beauty, family attitudes, and personal experiences.

What influences body image?

There are a number of factors that may influence body image, such as:

  • Childhood experiences - Childhood experiences, such as bullying or messages that are passed on to children (sometimes intrinsically and without meaning any harm) can significantly affect the development of a positive body image during teenage years and adulthood.

  • Media influence - Media, including advertisements, fashion magazines, and social media, often portray idealised and unrealistic body images. Exposure to these images can contribute to the development of negative body image and unrealistic beauty standards.

  • Cultural and societal factors - Cultural and societal norms regarding beauty and attractiveness can significantly impact individuals' perceptions of their own bodies. These norms may vary across different cultures and can influence body ideals and expectations.

  • Self-esteem and mental health - Body image is closely linked to self-esteem and mental health. Individuals with a positive body image tend to have higher self-esteem and better mental well-being, while negative body image is associated with lower self-esteem and an increased risk of mental health issues.

Therapy for body image

Promoting a positive body image involves fostering self-acceptance and self-compassion. Interventions may include education on media literacy, challenging unrealistic beauty standards, and encouraging healthy behaviours rather than focusing solely on appearance. There are a number of therapies that can help with body image difficulties, such as CBT, ACT, and Schema therapy.
